Cold Brew Coffee (why it's smoother than an iced latte)
Cold brew is one of the easiest ways to make smooth, refreshing coffee at home. Unlike iced coffee, which is brewed hot and cooled down, cold brew is extracted slowly by steeping the grounds in cold water. The result is naturally sweet, low in acidity and smooth on the palette.
Choose a Coarse Grind
Grind size is one of the most important parts of making cold brew.
Use a coarse grind, similar to raw sugar or coarse sea salt. Grinding too fine can make your cold brew muddy, bitter and difficult to filter.
For a simple batch of cold brew you'll need:
- 100g coffee
- 1 litre filtered water
- Large jar or container
- Fine filter or paper filter
Add the coffee to your container and pour over the water. Give it a gentle stir to make sure all the grounds are saturated. Place it in the fridge or a cool spot and leave for 12-18 hours.
Filter and Serve
Once you've brewed the coffee, strain it through a paper filter over a jug. You should be left with a smooth concentrate.
Serve it over ice, or add a good splash of your favourite milk
Which Coffee Works Best?
Cold brew works beautifully with chocolatey, nutty and full-bodied coffees.
The slower extraction highlights sweetness and creates a smooth finish that makes cold brew so popular during the warmer months.
Try cold brew with Wagonga's Columbian Organic or Peru La Cima coffees.
